As you jump to into the air with what strength you can muster to complete the exercise, you feel your heart beating faster. It beats so fast you feel your chest hurting, your vision gets blurrier, your breathing harder, and your sweat evaporates from the heat radiating from your body. All your mind can think of is to stop, but you can’t, lest you suffer the wraith from the Drill Instructor at the Quarter Deck. It is day one... It is day one, the longest day of boot camp, the day you gain the title of “recruit.” For those who have been alone most of their lives, it is not as dramatic to be separated from their love ones and/or significant others.
